For many students, getting a master’s degree abroad sounds exciting until they calculate the actual cost. Tuition alone can run into thousands of dollars, pounds or euros, and that is before accommodation, food, flights, visa fees, health insurance and everyday living expenses are added.

Depending on the programme, this can include:

For regular master’s students under the 2027 research-student scholarship guidelines, the stated monthly scholarship is ¥144,000, subject to government budget conditions.
DAAD’s EPOS programme also supports selected graduates from developing and emerging countries studying development-related postgraduate courses in Germany. Its funding can include a monthly scholarship, insurance payments and travel support.
This means a student who could never comfortably afford an international degree may still have an opportunity to study abroad without taking on enormous personal debt.
Who Can Apply for Fully Funded Master’s Programs?
There is no single eligibility requirement that applies to every scholarship.
However, most programmes expect applicants to already have an undergraduate degree or to complete one before beginning their master’s programme.
Academic performance matters, but it is rarely the only consideration.
Scholarship organisations may also look for evidence of leadership, professional experience, community involvement, career direction and the potential to create meaningful impact after graduation.
Chevening, for instance, is aimed at emerging leaders pursuing eligible one-year master’s degrees in the UK.
DAAD EPOS is more specialised. It targets graduates from developing and newly industrialised countries and normally expects relevant professional experience for participating programmes.
That distinction is important.
A candidate may be perfect for one scholarship and completely unsuitable for another. Instead of applying randomly to every opportunity you see online, you should first identify scholarships that match your education, work experience, nationality and long-term career plans.
Do You Need a First-Class Degree?
Not necessarily.
Excellent academic results can strengthen an application, but fully funded master’s scholarships do not all require applicants to graduate with the highest possible classification.
Many prestigious scholarship programmes evaluate candidates more broadly.
Your academic history matters, but your application may also need to answer questions such as:
What problem do you want to solve?
Why have you chosen this particular master’s degree?
How does the programme connect with your previous experience?
What have you already accomplished?
What will you do with the knowledge after graduation?
A candidate with excellent grades but no clear direction can sometimes produce a weaker application than someone with good academic results and a compelling record of leadership, work, volunteering or community impact.
Countries Offering Fully Funded Master’s Scholarships
International students should not restrict their search to one country.
Some of the biggest opportunities can be found across the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, the United States and multiple European countries.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are particularly interesting because programmes are jointly delivered by multiple universities. Scholarships can cover participation costs and contribute toward travel, visa expenses and living costs.
In July 2026, the European Commission announced that 37 newly selected Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters would be added to the catalogue, with student applications expected to begin in autumn 2026 for programmes starting in September 2027.
So if you are planning to study abroad in 2027, this is an excellent period to start preparing.
And preparation is exactly where many people get it wrong.
